SAULT BLUES SOCIETY'S PRESIDENTS REPORT
June 27th 2018
The objects and goals of the Sault Blues Society continue as follows
- To organize a Blues Festival
-To create additional performance opportunities for local musicians
-To provide opportunities for listeners and players of the blues to share knowledge and experience with others and to educate the people of our community about the diversity of the blues.
-To partner with other organizations and associations to support and further common goals.
- To provide opportunities for local and regional musicians to advance their understanding, skills and enjoyment of the blues.
During the third year of my Presidency of the Sault Blues Society we hosted the following events,
The Snyders put on a great show to a small audience on July 27th 2017 at the Rock Star Bar.
Harpdog Brown played at the Machine Shop as part of the 2018 Bon Soo Winter Carnival in Feb to the delight of the paid audience of 234 appreciating both Harpdog and the opening act the Jay Scali Band.
Monkey Junk on May 10th at the Verdi with a very enthusiastic sellout audience of 188 paid fans helped us once again add more dollars to the SBS's coffers.
In 2018 the SBS also applied for and was granted a $2,000.00 Sault Ste. Marie Cultural grant . We will use this grant money for upcoming 2018 acts yet to be booked, but are in the works.
The SBS has also partnered with Rusty and the Water Tower Inn by participating in the Blues for Food on Dec 10th 2017 raising money, donations and awareness of the local Soup Kitchen. The SBS also participated with the 10th Anniversary of Wednesday night Blues at the Water Tower Inn Jan 17th 2018.
Currently the SBS has 30 paid members and just over 300 fans, previously paid member and musicians on its email list. There are also well over 200 followers on the new SBS Facebook page.
In summary the SBS continues to present good quality Canadian acts several times per year. In the past there has been an issue with getting more than 120 fans to attend any one event , but our last two shows have been very successful and we have made a profit at both.
We are also searching for a couple of volunteers to be Executive members following the resignation of 4 founding members of the SBS. Those 4 dedicated and much appreciated members are Jim Traveson (past President) Norma Wall )past Treasurer and Ted Wall (acting past recording Secretary) and Gidget Cote several Executive positions.
I also attended the 3 day Blues Forum in Toronto in January 2018, representing the SBS. I made more great contacts and saw several more great shows and the Maple Blues Awards with several of them having played and will be playing for the SBS in the coming years.
